Teams could boycott Imola GP
Formula 1 teams are seriously considering boycotting this year's San Marino Grand Prix at Imola due to the European extradition legislation issue, according to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine
Team principal Eddie Jordan has revealed that unless governments exempt motorsport from the European Arrest Warrant law, there is no guarantee that teams will contest the Imola race on April 25 - the first European race of the season.
When asked if he would send his cars to Imola, Jordan said: "As a sports person and a racer, yes I will, but as a businessman with responsibility I have, I am saying there is a question mark. I have a responsibility to my staff and my family, and that part of me says no, I should not go."
Jordan argued that the investigation into the death of Ayrton Senna at Imola 10 years ago was a prime example of how team personnel might end up facing a jail sentence under the new legislation.
Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone added his weight to the argument this week when he said: "This arrest warrant is quite serious, obviously. It can happen to anybody. It's like a lot of the other cranky things that we have in Europe at the moment: Over-regulated, for the wrong reasons as well."
