Takuma Sato Q&A

It's been a tough first season so far for 'TS', who this weekend returns to the scene of his triumph in last year's British GP F3 support race. The Japanese driver has had little luck in the races, and at the Nurburgring had the misfortune to be punted off at the first corner by team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella. Ironically this was only the second time that Sato had qualified ahead of the Italian, having already managed it at Imola. As the silly season gets into full swing Sato has to start getting some results if he is to have any chance of hanging on to an F1 seat next year. Adam Cooper talked to him about the 'Ring disappointment and his return to Silverstone



"Unfortunately Giancarlo couldn't stop and he hit me. I was already side-by-side with Olivier Panis, and I almost overtook him, and I thought it was very respectable for everybody and it was a good turn-in. But then I had a hard impact! I saw that Giancarlo had been damaged and I realised what had happened."



"It was disappointing and also frustrating of course, but I couldn't complain, because it's such a tight corner at Turn One, and obviously sometimes things happen like this. It's such a shame. But then I was lucky because I could come back to the pits and change tyres. The sidepods had been damaged so aerodynamically it was wrong, and I was really fighting the car a lot. We lost some oil and water, and engine wise it was pretty on the limit. But I brought it home in one piece, which was good."



"There was no result because I lost two laps or something, but for me the racing spirit is still there. When I was slipstreaming Eddie Irvine I was really excited about it. And also if somebody closed up I had to let them go, because the flags were waving because I was being lapped. After I let them go I tried to keep close ton him and do some racing."



"Unfortunately! It shouldn't happen, but sometimes it's really difficult to judge things like that."



"Yes. The British GP is like a second home race for me because I've been competing in British racing for the last few years. So I'm really looking forward to it. And obviously the team is a Silverstone-based team."



"We've done a couple of tests - not a huge amount - but I think we'll be in reasonably good shape."
