Ferrari champion Michael Schumacher had to bow down to his teammate Rubens Barrichello in Sunday morning's warm-up for the San Marino Grand Prix as Ferrari continued their impressive form in front of a growing 'tifosi' crowd.

World Champion Schumacher will start the race from pole position, but for once he was outpaced by Brazilian Barrichello as the pair claimed the top two times.

With temperatures rising at the Imola circuit, they beat the Williams-BMW of Juan Pablo Montoya into third by more than half a second as unpredictable weather left teams frantically chasing set-up plans for all scenarios.

Briton Jenson Button, in his Renault enjoyed a scrap with Schumacher at the top of the times in the early part of the half-hour session, but he slipped to ninth by the end as Sauber came on strong.

There were four Bridgestone-shod cars in the top five places in the end, with German Nick Heidfeld and Brazilian Felipe Massa fifth and sixth for Sauber as the Michelin-shod McLaren pair of Finn Kimi Raikkonen and Scot David Coulthard were pushed down to sixth and seventh.

Jaguar and Toyota continued to struggle and took their places towards the bottom of the pile, while Arrows continued their strong showing with Enrique Bernoldi in tenth spot and Heinz-Harald Frentzen 13th fastest.
