Stat Attack: Hungary
With the 25th Hungarian Grand Prix fast approaching, Michele Merlino uncovers a bundle of milestones through the grid as we present a treasure trove of statistics related to the Budapest event
Germany personal scoreboard
• Jenson Button took his maiden win in Hungary in 2006 after a wait of 116 races. No one else has won starting from as far back as 13th in Budapest. Since that win, Jenson has never been back on the podium in Hungary.
• Lewis Hamilton has won two of the last three Hungarian Grands Prix. He finished fifth in 2008 due to a puncture which deprived him of a certain hat-trick. He was on pole in 2007 thanks to a controversial penalty for McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso. And while he also started from pole in '08, last year he was able to win from fourth on the grid. Hamilton has never been beaten in qualifying by a team-mate at this track.
• Michael Schumacher will start his 260th Formula 1 race in Budapest. He has an excellent qualifying record there and has started from pole seven times. He is also the most prolific winner, with four victories. The 2006 race marked the only time he started outside the top-10 on the grid - due to a penalty.
• Sebastian Vettel has had to retire from the last two Hungarian Grand Prix for mechanical failures. Curiously in 2007, he raced three times in twenty days at the Hungaroring. Prior to his F1 race (August 5), he raced in FRenault 3.5 (July 14/15) finishing fourth and daysthird respectively.
• Mark Webber celebrates 150th GP start this weekend. Last year he recorded a lap time of 1m20.358s Q2, which proved to be the fastest of the entire weekend. He also recorded the race's fastest lap - for the first time in his career. He finished third in the race, his best result in Hungary.
• Felipe Massa suffered a serious accident last year in qualifying. Two years ago his engine broke a few laps from the end when he had a clear lead, three years ago a mistake by the team left him without fuel in qualifying and he was forced to start fourteenth...The last "normal" Hungarian race for Felipe was in 2006, when he recorded his best result - seventh.
• Fernando Alonso also celebrates his 150th start, in the race which gave him his maiden win back in 2003. At the time he was the youngest winner in Formula 1 history at 22 years, but was then surpassed by Vettel. Fernando scored his last pole in Hungary a year ago.
• Rubens Barrichello won the 2002 race, duly followed home by team-mate Schumacher, who was helping him to score points to earn second place in the standings, such was Ferrari's superiority those days!
• Robert Kubica made his Formula 1 racing debut in Hungary at 2006, finishing seventh in a tricky race, but was later disqualified when his car was found to be underweight.
• Vitantonio Liuzzi has started twice but never finished in Budapest. In 2006, on his birthday, he was rammed by Kimi Raikkonen in the rain.
• Jaime Alguersuari made his racing debut here last year, becoming the youngest Formula 1 starter of all time (19 years and four months).
• Heikki Kovalainen won his only grand prix in Hungary in 2008. He has always finished in the points in Hungary.
• Pedro de la Rosa scored his only F1 podium in Hungary. In the closing stages in 2006, he had to fight wheel-to-wheel against Schumacher to earn it.
• Timo Glock obtained here his maiden podium in 2008 and was able to finish in the points in 2009 with sixth. He was second in the first GP2 race in 2006 and the poleman of the 2007 one.
Teams
• Ferrari has scored the highest number of poles in Hungary (seven, with McLaren), but only the third for wins (five, behind McLaren at nine and Williams at seven); the last came in 2004.
• Lotus scored its last points in Hungary back in 1992 and its last podium in 1987.
• McLaren are the most successful team here with nine wins, including the last three editions. They started from pole three times out of four in the last four years;
• Red Bull will celebrate its 100th race in Hungary. The team has never started from pole here, even if it came close last year with Vettel in second. Their best result is Webber's third place in 2009
• Renault scored its last pole in Budapest one year ago with Alonso.
• Williams has won seven times in Hungary. The last came thirteen years ago - when Jacques Villeneuve was victorious in his title.
Other notes
• It's the 25th Hungarian Grand Prix, a quarter of a century of F.1 racing in Budapest. A track where notoriously overtaking is extremely difficult, however the win came from pole only eleven times out of twenty-four.
• Three current drivers obtained here their maiden win (Alonso, Button and Kovalainen) and two their maiden podium (de la Rosa and Glock);
• Last year three Renault-powered cars conquered the first three places of the starting grid. In the last ten editions only Michael Schumacher (2001, 2004) and Lewis Hamilton (2007, 2009) were able to win twice in Hungary.
