Silverstone, day 2: Trulli goes quicker

Jarno Trulli continued Renault's impressive pre-season testing form by keeping his place at the head of the timesheets at Silverstone today (Tuesday). The Italian went two tenths quicker than he did yesterday, recording a best lap of 1m24.195s

Despite covering just 10 laps due to a gearbox problem, Heinz-Harald Frentzen was second quickest for Arrows, just a couple of hundredths behind the Renault. Ominously for Jaguar, the German was over 1.5s up on Pedro de la Rosa in the R3, which uses the same Cosworth CR3 engine.

Giancarlo Fisichella tried the Melbourne-spec Honda engine for the first time today. A mechanical problem in the morning caused him to be towed back to the pits, but he had a more positive afternoon session and finished third quickest.

Team-mate Takuma Sato was up until the small hours of the previous night having a seat fitting in the hope of finding a comfortable position in the EJ12. It was time well spent and the Japanese driver was much happier with the car and covered 74 laps, more than any other driver present.

Jacques Villeneuve and the BAR mechanics spent the morning practising pitstops. The former champion had a fright went a small fire broke out at the rear of the car, however it was quickly extinguished and he was able to resume his testing duties in the afternoon.

Ferrari continued to test its old and new cars head-to-head in Imola and once again Michael Schumacher was quickest in the 2001-spec car. The track was damp in the morning, but dried in the afternoon and the world champion set a best time of 1m23.459s. Luca Badoer's best lap in the F2002 was 1m24.976s.
