Silverstone day 2: Barrichello on top

Rubens Barrichello set the fastest time of the day at Silverstone as all 18 drivers present managed to get in some dry laps, despite the rain showers that broke up testing at the Northamptonshire circuit on Wednesday

The Brazilian's Ferrari was two tenths of a second up on Kimi Raikkonen's McLaren. Monaco Grand Prix winner David Coulthard was third fastest, with Eddie Irvine's Jaguar a distant fourth. The Ulsterman only ran in the morning before handing over to test driver James Courtney and team-mate Pedro de la Rosa.

Ralf Schumacher was fifth for Williams, but Juan Pablo Montoya had a more difficult day. His BMW engine suffered a blow-up, limiting his amount of running.

Renault ran Jenson Button and Jarno Trulli, Enrique Bernoldi was on hand for Arrows, and Giancarlo Fisichella (fastest on the first day) and Takuma Sato shared a single Jordan.

Only Felipe Massa tested for Sauber, while Toyota did not start running with Allan McNish and Mika Salo until the afternoon.

British American Racing test driver Patrick Lemarie joined Jacques Villeneuve at the test. While Villeneuve carried out tyre testing for Bridgestone, LeMarie drove Honda's development car. He was carrying out work on the rear suspension geometry, but suffered a gearbox failure.

Ferrari also tested at Monza for a second and final day. The team used a modified track lay-out that included two temporary chicanes. Later in the day the circuit was converted back to its standard lay-out. Luciano Burti was behind the wheel of a year-old F2001 and worked on Bridgestone tyre development and brake testing. He covered a total of 84 laps and set a quickest time of 1m25.476s.
