Schumacher to miss next two races

Michael Schumacher's hopes of returning to action for the Italian Grand Prix were dashed after he aggravated his injury during a Monza test

The Ferrari star, who broke his leg at the British GP, made his long-awaited comeback in the first of three test sessions, but pulled up in agony after completing only 13 laps.

The 30-year-old returned to the pits to receive a standing ovation from his fans, before announcing his intention to sit-out the next two races.

'I had a test today and there were problems in my leg,' he said.

'They are too big to do a proper job. Basically it is impossible to drive properly at the moment.

'I don't think I will compete in the next two races.'

Schumacher, who was joined in the practice sessions with Mika Salo and Eddie Irvine, put in a fastest lap of 1.26.90s, five-tenths slower than Salo's time.

The news will come as a great shock to thousands of fans who were predicting a Schumacher comeback in Monza.
