Schumacher Rejects Alonso Comparison
World Champion Michael Schumacher is refusing to accept comparisons between Championship leader Fernando Alonso and himself
Alonso is the youngest pole position setter and Grand Prix winner in history and he could also become the youngest champion if he takes the title this season.
The Renault driver leads the standings after three consecutive victories and he is looking to be the first Spaniard to win his home Grand Prix this weekend. Schumacher is 26 points behind Alonso.
Despite Alonso's form, the seven-time World Champion says it's too early to rule him or rivals McLaren from the title fight.
"I know this comparison [with Alonso] is fashionable at the moment but honestly I have to say I have a bit of a problem with it," said Schumacher. "There are a lot of other guys who are very fast and also when I was young I didn't want to be compared to other drivers.
"Clearly it would be an advantage for us if we scored more points than him but again there are also other drivers that I see fighting for the Championship. I still believe McLaren-Mercedes will have a big chance."
