Schumacher: I Excel When Things Go Wrong

World Champion Michael Schumacher has revealed that despite his seemingly unassailable 46-point lead in the Drivers' Championship he is insecure about his chances of lifting a record-equalling fifth world title.

Schumacher has dominated the sport this season with six wins in the nine races to date, and everything has gone his way in 2002, the German being the only driver who has finished all races.

The Ferrari driver said he feels insecure when things go so right, and claimed that he excels in the most difficult moments.

"When everything is going well, I get insecure because I know it's not going to last," Schumacher told the Sunday Telegraph magazine. "I get very confident when things are not going well."

Schumacher believes that his insecurities come from the fact that he distances himself from his on-track rivals but he insisted he is not in Formula One to be liked.

He has had high-profile on-track clashes with the likes of Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve and David Coulthard in recent years and Schumacher believes it is his passion for racing that often causes tension.

"Everyone likes to be liked, even myself. But I'm only interested in racing," he said. "I've never been able to get on well with other drivers. I don't know why. Ralf is more open than me. I am very hard to get to know."

But family man Schumacher added that he has no intention of changing his lifestyle and promised to never become involved in the show business side of the sport.

"I do the PR side of things as well as I can, but maybe I don't always do it well enough," he added. "I'm not interested in the show business around racing. I'm not a superstar. I'm not a movie star."
