Schumacher Ends Barcelona Test on Top - Final Day

World Champion Michael Schumacher wrapped up Barcelona's four-day test today, the German setting the pace in his Ferrari.

World Champion Michael Schumacher wrapped up Barcelona's four-day test today, the German setting the pace in his Ferrari.

Schumacher posted the quickest time of the week with a lap of 1:14.670 at the wheel of the F2004 car as the team continued with their tyre testing and car development programme. The German worked again alongside the team's test driver Luca Badoer, fourth quickest today.

Spaniard Fernando Alonso, who this week has been working on adapting to the new qualifying format set to be introduced at Silverstone, was second fastest in the Renault R24. The French team worked also with test driver Franck Montagny, who finished at the bottom of the times.

Felipe Massa, together with Schumacher the busiest man today with 109 laps of the Spanish track, managed the third fastest time as he completed Sauber's preparation work for the French and British Grands Prix.

"In completion of our test this week we did a validation of the aerodynamic data which we collected during the past two days and further to this assessed new dampers," said Sauber's race engineer Mike Krack.

"In addition we worked with Bridgestone on the rear tyre construction for the British Grand Prix in two weeks as well as on the front tyre construction for Silverstone and the following summer races.

"Overall it was a good test for us which went without technical problems and proved once again the reliability of the car. We ran a lot of laps which enabled us to gather valuable data."

The Jaguar team had only one driver on track after Austrian Christian Klien was forced to sit out the session after he injured his hand on Thursday. Bjorn Wirdheim was in charge of testing duties with the Cosworth-powered car, the Swede finishing fifth.
