The Sauber team were delighted after their new car for the 2002 season took to the track for the first time on Tuesday at the Fiorano circuit in Italy.
The new Ferrari-powered C21 was driven around the Italian circuit by German Nick Heidfeld, who completed a total of 59 laps with a best time of 1:00.59, nearly a second quicker than his previous best at the track with last year's C20 chassis.
Team boss Peter Sauber, who on Tuesday announced the team will continue to be sponsored by energy drink Red Bull, was pleased with the new car's performance but refused to get carried away.
"After 20 laps we could stop holding our breath," Sauber told Swiss Blick newspaper. "That's when we knew that the C21 is no flop as Nick was already faster with the new car than what he had been with the old one.
"Temperature, water and oil-cooler, gear changes, clutch, engine, there were just no problems. But of course, we have to stay on earth, and not start dreaming."
"I completed 59 laps I have a real good feeling with the 2002 car," added Heidfeld. "The engine never stopped and the car was never towed back to the pit during the entire day. This is a first contact and I need more mileage overall, but my first impression of the new car is very favourable.".
Newcomer Felipe Massa will have to wait until next week's test in Barcelona to get his first run in the car after the track was covered by snow in the afternoon.
"I am desperately looking forward to the real test with the C21 in Barcelona next week," said Brazilian Massa. "The weather has not really been helping here."
Sauber last year enjoyed their most successful Formula One season since they entered Grand Prix racing in 1993, finishing in fourth place in the Constructors' Championship. The new C21 will be officially unveiled on January 25.
