Saturday Second Free Practice - Canadian GP

World champion Michael Schumacher placed himself as the favourite to take pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix after setting a blistering pace in the final practice session at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit.

Schumacher, who had been outpaced by his McLaren rivals on Friday, was more than half a second quicker than his main championship opponent David Coulthard in the first of the McLarens.

Mika Hakkinen, fastest in the first three practice sessions, was third quickest in front of the second Ferrari of Rubens Barrichello.

Sauber's Nick Heidfeld continued to show his and his team's promising form by setting the fifth fastest time today ahead of teammate Kimi Raikkonen, who is making his debut at the Canadian track.

Local hero Jacques Villeneuve was eleventh quickest after being unable to run during the first practice session today due to mechanical problems with his BAR.

Brazilian Ricardo Zonta, standing in for Heinz-Harald Frentzen after the German withdrew from the Grand Prix feeling unwell, was fifteenth quickest in his return to racing.
