McLaren-Mercedes driver Kimi Raikkonen topped the times in the opening practice session on Saturday after denying under-fire Antonio Pizzonia top spot at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Finn Raikkonen set a best time of 1:19.012 late in the 45-minute session to finish ahead of Jaguar driver Pizzonia, who had led the way for most of the practice.

The 22-year-old Brazilian, who completed 21 laps of the track, ended 0.250 seconds adrift in second place with Rubens Barrichello third in Ferrari's new car despite a spin.

David Coulthard was fourth fastest for McLaren ahead of Ferrari's World Champion Michael Schumacher, with both drivers almost half-a-second behind leader Raikkonen.

Renault's Jarno Trulli was sixth, Sauber driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen ended seventh and Williams' Juan Pablo Montoya eighth, despite his session being blighted by a spin into the gravel.

Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella and Williams driver Ralf Schumacher completed the top-ten as the final drivers to be within a second of Raikkonen's time.

Barrichello lost the back end of his new Ferrari car going into turn four after half-an-hour of running but was able to control the spin and continue before returning to the pits.

Montoya put a wheel on the grass entering turn six and spun off at high-speed into the gravel as his session was brought to an end early.
