Sato Considering Options Outside Jordan

Ulsterman Eddie Irvine could be given a Formula One lifeline at Jordan after the manager of Takuma Sato revealed the Japanese driver might ditch the British team for a better option.

Irvine was plunged into a fight for his Formula One survival last Friday when he was axed at Jaguar along with Pedro de la Rosa in favour of young pairing Mark Webber and Antonio Pizzonia.

The 36-year-old admitted his only remaining option is a seat at Jordan, and rumours that such a deal may happen were strengthened when Sato's manager Andrew Gilbert-Scott revealed the Japanese driver is looking at other options.

"The situation is quite strong for Taku and things have improved in the recent weeks - but I am not saying that staying with Jordan would be the best thing," said Gilbert-Scott. "We have to look at what is best for us.

"I feel Taku has a long-term career in Formula One and we are trying to make sure that happens. I spoke to Eddie (Jordan) on Friday. We are still trying to get it sorted but it will still be quite a long time.

"I don't think the decision rests with Eddie (Jordan). That is the position we are in and the Irvine thing is nothing new - it has been going six months."

Irvine is one of several drivers chasing the Jordan seat, and while Giancarlo Fisichella is expected to stay, the Silverstone-based team have refused to rule out the possibility of Sato being dropped. Sponsors Benson and Hedges are believed to want a British driver in the team next year and are keen for Irvine to return to Jordan, where he started his Formula One career.

They are one of three current sponsors who the team say are "in the process of negotiations" over their level of backing in 2003 and Irvine's possible appointment is thought to be key to any financial input from the tobacco giant.
