Salo soaks in success

Mika Salo revelled in the adoration of the fanatical Ferrari fans as he finished third in the Italian Grand Prix

The Finn has scored 10 points in the five races since he was signed todeputise for injured Michael Schumacher after Silverstone.

'This was an unbelievable result. To be honest we are lucky to be in the top 10 after the two days we had before this,' said Salo.

'And it is very emotional to be out there in front of all the Ferrari fans.

'Ralf made his car very wide at the start - on both sides - and I couldn't get past.

'But I had a great pit stop to help me get this result.

'It is great to be on the podium again.'

The Finn was under team orders before the start of the weekend and he had been told to help Eddie Irvine in the race if he could.

Although there were fears he would block David Coulthard when he took the lead briefly during the pit stops it never happened.

'It's difficult to do if we have two or three cars between us - well impossible actually,' he said.

'We have new stuff coming next week and start testing on Tuesday and hopefully that will make the car quicker.'
