Renault: No Decision on 2003 Drivers Yet

Renault will not decide on the future of their current race drivers Jarno Trulli and Jenson Button for several months and have not ruled out a promotion to the race team for test driver Fernando Alonso, it was revealed on Saturday.

Renault will not decide on the future of their current race drivers Jarno Trulli and Jenson Button for several months and have not ruled out a promotion to the race team for test driver Fernando Alonso, it was revealed on Saturday.

Briton Button has had an impressive start to the year after his terrible time last season, while Trulli has shown impressive pace but failed to find success and pick up points in the races.

Button is officially on loan to the Renault team from Williams-BMW but his contract is up for renewal at the end of the year and Renault team chairman Patrick Faure backed the young Briton for his impressive turn-around.

"We have been very happy with what our drivers have done and I must say especially Jenson," Faure said. "He had a bad year last year, a difficult year, but this year he has been consistent all around the races and he has been really very good.

"We knew Jarno was very quick and he confirmed that, but it is really too early to discuss the drivers of next year now. We still have two or three months to look at the races and think about it.

"I don't think (Alonso) is going to stay a test driver for eternity. I am not sure he would be happy. We haven't decided yet our team of drivers for next year and obviously Fernando is a part of the equation."
