Renault Aim to Fight for Third Place

World Champions Ferrari will be the dominant team in 2002 and Williams will be challenging them, according to Renault's director of engineering Pat Symonds.

World Champions Ferrari will be the dominant team in 2002 and Williams will be challenging them, according to Renault's director of engineering Pat Symonds.

Renault, who have taken over Benetton and will make their official return as a team next season, are hoping to fight for third place in the Constructors' Championship, says Symonds.

"I think that Ferrari are still going to be quite dominant next year and I think Williams are going to be challenging them," Symonds told ITV. "I feel that a realistic target for Renault is to finish third in the Championship.

"I say realistic, that means I believe we can do it, I'm not saying it's going to be easy, it's going to be very very difficult because all our competitors are good. Now in order to do that we have to be racing at the front which means we ought to be capable of taking a race win along the way."

Ferrari, with nine Grand Prix wins, clinched their third consecutive Constructors' Championship in 2001, while Williams finished in third place behind McLaren after scoring four victories, the same number as the Woking-based outfit. Benetton finished in seventh place with only ten points.
