Reliability demand on BMW's shoulders
BMW will be under pressure to raise the level of reliability in 2002, according to the boss of the BMW.WilliamsF1 team
Frank Williams has reiterated that while he was pleased with the team's performance in 2001, he remains unsatisfied with the amount of problems Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya faced.
"The truth is that the season was better than expected," Williams said. "Except for reliability, we exceeded our expectations, which was to win three races. For next year the key word is reliability. We weren't very pleased with ourselves this year. We didn't do very well at all on that. We want to do much better.
"It is easily said, but there are plans in place, including a vast amount of testing mileage. That's the key - to test and test and test. It is very demanding on the cars, but above all on BMW. When we're testing we consume an enormous amount of engines. I won't let you know how many engines there are, but there are a lot of cars built to pay for those engines."
Everyone at the team, including BMW, concurs with Williams' point of view. Montoya said: "We have to improve the reliability of the car from this year, which was frustrating especially for me - how many points went with mechanical problems? For next year it is one of the biggest issues. I think the way the BMW has evolved is amazing, so it's a matter of putting the package together."
