Red Bull not ready to win yet, says Webber
Red Bull Racing will not be in a position to challenge for race wins on pure pace next year, thinks Mark Webber, even though the team are expecting to make a big step forward in performance
Webber thinks that the team will be able to unlock much improved results in 2008 if they can get on top of the reliability issues that marred their 2007 campaign, but he thinks a victory is still too much for them.
"You know, I could tell you we want to be there or there and give you numbers and rankings, but this is all inappropriate," said Webber during a visit to the Swatch Snowmobile Challenge near Salzburg.
"It would be great to challenge BMW for third but, on the other hand, almost everybody else is determined to improve. It will be close and hard. If we have a reliable car the good results will follow suit. If we could win? Under normal circumstances not yet."
Webber believes that the arrival of Geoff Willis has been a big bonus to the team in helping them get on top of the reliability issues - and thinks that the team can take several podiums in 2008.
Looking back at what happened this year and how the team can go forward, he said: "Personally, I was very satisfied with my own performance as I had only two spins in Melbourne and in Montreal.
"There were seven retirements, one because of the accident with Sebastian Vettel and six caused by technical failures.
"I know reliability is the issue for us to score not one but several podiums next year, and I am very confident that Geoff (Willis) can provide the last missing link for gaining that reliability. We had one shot for a win in Fuji but that was a different kind of race."
Webber also reiterated that he was never worried about his own future at Red Bull Racing, despite wild speculation after the season that Fernando Alonso could take one of the seats at the team.
"I was very relaxed indeed. Actually, I was in the jungle for 10 days (Tasmania) with no television feed or satellite phones. When I got back everybody was asking me on that (topic).
"Nothing is for all time, so if a marriage breaks up, it happens. But there was no sign from RBR, so I was not really concerned. I have another year on my contract."
