The German's participation in the Montreal race has been in doubt since be tore a 10cm wound in his calf when he crashed out of the Monaco Grand Prix last Sunday.
Team spokesman Nav Sidhu said on Friday a decision will not now be made until next week.
"There is no need to make a decision now. If there had to be one, it would be 'no'," he said.
"He couldn't walk on it Monday or Tuesday, but he is starting to now. Seeing how far he has come this week there is no knowing how far it might improve in the next four or five days. We are hopeful.
"He is much more upbeat today. He will go to Montreal and we will decide then."
Bruno Junqueira stood in for Ralf Schumacher at the Monza test yesterday, and had been practising pit-stops at the Italian track (see separate story). It is thought the BMW WilliamsF1 team were preparing the young Brazilian in case he is required to race in Canada on June 18.
