What's behind McLaren's fresh A-B F1 team angst?

Ralf Schumacher Q&A

Ralf Schumacher has been one of the stars of the opening races of the 2001 season, although he has just two points to show for it. He's responded well to the challenge from new arrival Juan Pablo Montoya, and while the Colombian justifiably got the plaudits in Brazil, Ralf didn't really get a chance to show what he could do on race day. Still, the future looks bright for Michael's younger brother. Adam Cooper spoke to him at Imola

"Obviously it's what we were working to for the last two years. We've finally achieved it, but the jump up there is difficult, and to stay there is even more difficult. We're still a bit inconsistent, and I think we've proved again here that we're competitive, but the first two races we were so-so. We haven't reached the level we were looking for yet, but we're very close."

"In Brazil I think we were the quickest car in the field, and it's just a question of how it is here. Aerodynamically we're not there yet, and tyre wise I think in dry conditions we have a good tyre, but in the wet there's still a lot to do."

"So far except Melbourne, where the tyre itself didn't work, we haven't found a track which didn't fit to our car. So we'll see how it is in Monaco, for example."

"It has cost me a lot of points. Twice I was in a very good position and I got kicked out by other people, but that's motor racing."

"I think it's one of the best engines, if not the best in the field, there's no doubt. But straightline speed is also about the efficiency of the car. On the other hand it shows that aerodynamically we're not as strong as we need to be."

"From the beginning on I was quite happy in the team, and that hasn't changed. Obviously by now I know everyone in the team, which helps."

"It's just the way of working, the way they do the work. There's a lot of patience in there, but a lot of strength in there as well. They know what they want, and they achieve it. Sometimes it might take a bit longer, but they achieve it."

"His life is motor racing, and you see that every time you work with him. He's really pushing hard for everything and tries to get the best out of everybody, which is his job."

"He's another driver to beat, but then it is something special as well. To fight against him is always nice."
