Raikkonen hopeful of Silverstone win
McLaren driver Kimi Raikkonen believes he can win tomorrow's British Grand Prix after qualifying on the front row of the grid
The Finn's optimism comes only a day after he had played down the chances of McLaren fighting for races victories any time soon.
Raikkonen, who is 37 points adrift of Fernando Alonso, has effectively written off his title chances but saw no reason why he could not be a race winner at Silverstone.
"We are not fighting for the championship really but we always try to win every race," said the Finn, who had to hustle around the circuit after his late final tyre change to start his flying lap before time ran out.
"We are in a position to try to win and I don't have anything to lose so I can go for the win and see what happens."
Raikkonen had not looked quick in practice but explained that McLaren had gone back to old settings after trying out some new things on Friday.
His teammate Juan Pablo Montoya was eighth fastest, but the Colombian is under investigation after David Coulthard claimed he had deliberately blocked him.
Montoya was disappointed with his performance.
"I have not been able to get the right balance throughout the weekend and was struggling during qualifying today," said Montoya. "I should be higher up the grid than eighth, and I'm disappointed with this.
"However there is a long race tomorrow, and as we have seen before anything can happen."
