Q&A with Robert Kubica
Robert Kubica ended qualifying for the British Grand Prix a frustrated man. With his title rivals running into problems of their own, the Pole was left to rue a spring damper problem that side-lined him in Q3. Afterwards he talked to the press about his disappointment, had a comical argument with a journalist about the rules, and shared his fears about the pace of McLaren and Ferrari
Q. What happened at the end of the qualifying session?
Robert Kubica: I don't know. Suddenly I felt the car pulling to one side and I nearly couldn't keep it on the track. So now the guys are looking at it and trying to see what the problem was.
Q. Was it a suspension issue, or something to do with the steering wheel?
RK: I don't know. I have no clue.
Q. How does it affect tomorrow's strategy?
RK: The strategy? It is no different.
Q. Will you try and change something because you try and qualify with a certain level of fuel. Now you are starting from P10?
RK: Well, if the regulations would allow maybe we would change strategy, but the regulations don't allow it.
Q. So will you change the strategy and go for a shorter first stint tomorrow?
RK: I am saying we cannot change strategy.
Q. But I thought tomorrow you could...
RK: I have already fuel load which I have to start the race. Once you go into Q3 you cannot change the fuel load in the car...
Q. How do you judge the general performance this weekend?
RK: As always at Silverstone, the weather plays quite an important role, in qualifying there was some sunshine so it helped us more. We could perform pretty well I think. Q1 was okay, Q2 was okay also although we were planning to do two runs we qualified with one run without any problems we were just two or three tenths off McLaren so it was looking good. Unfortuantely we had this problem so it cost quite a lot of places. I think it was easy to be quite a lot in front but that is racing.
Q. Do you feel team is not developing at same pace as others?
RK: Lately the gap to the front team has increased, especially in Magny-Cours due to some parts that we have put on the car that were not working as the team was expecting. Then for here we went back to some (original) parts and it looks like the car is performing better. Surprisingly some teams are struggling like Ferrari, more than expected, so we have to see but I think the gap to McLaren and Ferrari, all in all, if we take the last four or five races is bigger than the first three races.
Q. Rivals still making mistakes?
RK: I don't know if there are mistakes or track conditions, and it depends a lot. Also we were not good in Q3, and Q1 and Q2 was very good, so I think as always here at Silverstone we can influence a lot the balance of the car and that can have some influence on the other teams as well.
Q. Have you made a setup compromise for rain?
RK: Yes slightly, but also we had massive rain today and it was dry so everything can happy. But it is kind of compromise between 100 percent dry and 100 percent wet.
Q. What position would make you happy?
RK: Staying realistic, looking at the performance and looking how tough Silverstone is for overtaking if it stays dry, there is not a lot I can do. Of course I will try to jump some places into the front but anyway the race is very long so we will see. It will not be easy for sure but if the car is performing well then that will help me to go more to the front.
Q. Are you impressed by Red Bull's performance?
RK: Webber has always been very good at qualifying, and they are quite strong - very strong I would say. He has been very quick all weekend so all-in-all, in some ways yes and in some other ways not really.
Q. Can they get closer to you than you can to Ferrari and McLaren?
RK: It is one qualifying. As I said, I think the weather plays quite an important role in today's qualifying so in my opinion we have to wait longer to judge but for sure every team is working hard to improve. Some teams are struggling sometimes, like Ferrari here, nobody was expecting them to struggle so much, so it is changing. Let's wait and see.
Q. You're still second in the championship. Where will you be on Monday?
RK: I don't know. I am not really looking at this for now, we have to find out where the problem is and try to make a good race tomorrow. Unfortunately we lost a good opportunity because Ferrari was struggling, also McLaren was not as strong with Hamilton, so we could be in front. But now we are in fifth row and we have to fight.
