Q & A with Renault's Technical Director

Conducted and provided by Renault's press office.

Conducted and provided by Renault's press office.

Q. What is the philosophy behind the design of the R24?

Bob Bell:

This car is the product of a carefully planned process of evolution. The aerodynamics, the construction and the mechanical package have all been studied to see where we can improve performance. The R24 includes some obvious fresh ideas, such as a new gearbox and redesigned suspension, and the new engine benefits from much improved packaging. But our main objective has been to make improvements to every technical aspect.

Q. Will the new regulations have an impact on performance?

BB:

I don't think so. For the chassis, the changes made to the rear wing brought with them significant aerodynamic losses. However, we have already gained them back, and the R24 is more efficient in the wind tunnel than the R23B.

Q. How would you describe the working relationship between Enstone and Viry-Chatillon?

BB:

It has never been better. Communications are excellent, and our work together is generating interesting technical concepts: the relationship is exemplary, and this has played its part in creating the R24. Furthermore, we benefit from the resources of a major manufacturer. Renault took the right approach, letting Enstone work as a Formula One team but making their skills available to us. It's an ideal situation.

Q. What are your feelings ahead of the coming season?

BB:

For 2004, we will not accept weaknesses in any area. If we want to compete for the World Championship, this is the philosophy we must abide by. Our people have always worked as hard as possible, and they know that this needs to continue in the future: our performance relies upon every individual's work.
