Q & A with Jarno Trulli

Q. What was your general impression of driving at night?

Jarno Trulli: It is very different. The track, it is what it is, considering the nature of the city. It is all 90-degrees corners and unfortunately extremely bumpy - so it is not extremely exciting. I just hope you like the night race.

On the other hand, there are some spots that are too dark and we have gone through with Charlie (Whiting) about many things that need to be improved. On top of that the circuit is also very, very bumpy.

Q. Were there some dark spots then out on the track?

JT: Yes. Myself and some other drivers complained about it in the drivers' briefing, so definitely there is still some work to do.

Q. You've talked about the bumps. How much compromise are you having to make on the setup?

JT: Quite a lot because it is so bumpy it is quite hard to drive the car. So, the more comfortable it is the better you can push. We still have to find the right setup for tomorrow.

Q. But this is a maximum downforce track. It should suit you guys?

JT: Well, unfortunately it is bumpy which isn't very good for our car.

Q. Will the pitlane entry and exit be changed?

JT: There has been a lot of talk about the pit entry and pit exit because it is quite dangerous. But at the moment I don't know what we can do or what can be done for tomorrow.

Q. Has Charlie said he will look into it?

JT: He is going to look into a lot of things that need to be changed or improved.

Q. What are the other areas that need improving?

JT: There are some spots that are still quite dark, the bumpiness and some kerbs. In general we have been talking quite a lot, well nearly one hour, in the drivers' briefing. It was quite amazing how many things came up after the first two practice sessions.

Q. Is the Turn 10 solution better, or does it need changing again?

JT: We have gone through this, and maybe there is another opportunity to change it for tomorrow and make it a little bit safer and better.

Q. Some drivers have said the lights are off-putting, because they give the strobe sensation when driving. What do you think?

JT: It is definitely not what you want when you drive a Formula One car. It is what it is, and we have spoken about it.

Q. Are there changes for tomorrow, or more for next year?

JT: There are some dark spots in the middle of corners and exit of corners. I hope this can be improved, but on the other hand to fix all the problems I believe it is a bit too late now. There are several corners that are a bit too dark in general. We went through it with Charlie, and there are more than what we mentioned. Hopefully for next year it will be better. A lot of drivers complained about it.

Q. What happened with your spin?

JT: I think it was very clear. On the exit of a very quick corner I just spun. That was not a problem, but the problem was I was right in the middle of the track on the racing line. So what I did, I took in a fraction of a second, the safest way - which was to move away from the line.

Unfortunately, I had no other option than either spinning the car and going back on the line again, which was very dangerous from my point of view, or drive close by the wall which is off the line and get back in the pits. I broke the rules but I had very little option, especially in terms of safety. I did the best thing, and I would do the same thing again if I was in a similar situation, but the stewards did not agree. But unfortunately they cannot understand everything.

Q. What about the lack of grip at the final corner? Is that a worry?

JT: It is a worry obviously. It is a worry for everybody but it is a street circuit so you have to look after everything and be careful.

Q. You had reservations about this track before coming here. Overall, how do you feel about it after the first day's practice?

JT: From a safety point of view I think the circuit is pretty slow so it doesn't look too dangerous - even if there are some spots that need to be improved. From the lights point of view a lot of drivers complained, so that can be improved. And the bumpiness is pretty bad, like never before, and the circuit layout is what it is. We are where we are, and the nature of the city gives us 90-degree corners. So it is not extremely exciting.

Q. Do you think you can find the right solution regarding the fight for fourth in the Constructors' Championship?

JT: It looks like our car doesn't really like this kind of bumpy circuit, so we will see what we can change tomorrow.
