Porto set for revival

Portuguese authorities have confirmed that a modified version of the famous Porto GP circuit, last used as the host of the country's grand prix in 1960, will be the scene for an historic revival meeting next year

The modified circuit, which at 2.7 miles will be slightly shorter than the original 4.6 mile version, will have a new layer of asphalt put down to be ready in time for the event to take place on the weekend of July 8-10, 2005.

The race programme is being put together with help from the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association and will feature two pre-1960 F1 races, a Formula Junior race and two Sportscar/GT Races which will last more than one hour.

Porto's mayor Rui Rio said he expects more than 100,000 spectators to be attracted to the event, which will also feature a classic car rally, a sponsor's village and other social events.

The old Porto circuit has not been used since 1960, when Sir Jack Brabham won with a Cooper Climax en route to his second world championship title.
