Patrick Head Q&A

The Spanish GP was a race of mixed fortunes for BMW Williams. Juan Pablo Montoya earned six points a track which was not expected to be kind to the team, but on the other hand there were three separate fumbles in the pits between the two cars, plus both an off-track excursion and a late engine failure for Ralf Schumacher. The latter was the first mechanical retirement of the season, and one of several things to give technical director Patrick Head food for thought

"I think we expected to be some way behind here, so we're probably not too surprised. Meanwhile it's obviously a deficiency in the complete package, and we've obviously got to make sure we improve it. We don't just want to be quicker at some races and slow at others."

"Michael seems to have got everything on his side, even in terms of breaking down in the warm-up this morning. Lady luck is obviously shining on him. They say to some extent you make your own luck, but with Ferrari, all the bad luck seems to go with Rubens Barrichello."

"I don't think you ever give up in this business, you always aim to get back on top. Championships are one thing, but individual races are another, and obviously one wants to win as many individual races as possible, and we've only won one so far this year."

"I don't know. We'll have to see. I think we'll be stronger in Austria than here, but we'll have to see. We're going to have to improve a lot very quickly in order to get back into a competitive position."

"I don't know. Obviously BMW will look into that closer and establish exactly what happened, and I'm sure they will be taking every step to make sure it's not repeated.

"I really don't know. I'm sure Ralf isn't too happy about what happened, but what caused him to do that, I don't know."

"Yes. I think certainly with Ralf's stop, after he'd been off, he was very uncommunicative to us in terms of telling us what had happened. He didn't say I've been off and I think I've damaged the front, he just said there may be something wrong with the front wing. When he came in we changed the nose, but there was loads of grass and rubbish hanging from the bottom of the car! But yes, the pit work wasn't as good as it has been, so we'll obviously look at that and work out why and put it right for next time. At Juan Pablo's first stop there was one wheel which took rather longer than it should have done."

"Anything that's loaded will flex, but here you've got a combination of high aerodynamic loading, and a few vibration strips on the kerb. On the stresses of the wings everybody needs to not just be looking at the downforce, but at the lateral inertia forces as well."
