Olivier Panis Q&A

Just before the German GP British American Racing confirmed that Olivier Panis will be staying on for a second season. While that didn't come as a great surprise, it was nevertheless good news for the 34-year-old Frenchman, who has done a very solid job this year. He has kept team mate Jacques Villeneuve on his toes, outqualifying and outracing the Canadian several times. However, much to his frustration he hasn't scored points since taking fifth in Austria, and the car's relatively poor form in qualifying has not helped. Adam Cooper spoke to the Frenchman



"Two stops was maybe OK, but on the first lap I had so many troubles, especially at the first chicane, and I lost some places. After that I pushed hard to overtake some people. I fought a lot with Jarno, and it was quite good. He spun off, which was a little bad for him, but that's racing. It was fun, but no points. I was just a little unlucky with traffic."



"It's good for the team, good for the motivation, because we're waiting for new bits for Hungary, and everyone will be pushing hard before then. Only the drivers will be on holiday!"



"I feel happy, because I trust the team for the rest of the season, and I trust the team for next year. I'm sure we will work very hard together, and we need to improve the car now. But I'm very happy to continue with BAR Honda."



"We started the season very well together, we had quite a competitive car. During the three or four last races it's been a little difficult, but we need to understand and to push hard to improve the car for next year."



"We have quite a good baseline, but we just need to improve the performance. At the low speed circuits we don't have the downforce we need, I think. Now we need to understand why, and to change it."



"It's true. The car is generally quicker in the races, and that's because some teams have a special qualifying spec with different cooling and things like that."



"There's no problem with Jacques. We have a very good relationship anyway. We had a problem at Silverstone at the first corner, but he called me when he finished the race, and he said he was very sorry he hit me, because he made a mistake. I accepted it because we had a good relationship before and we continue to have a good relationship. So no Problem."



"It's really good for him and for me, because I push him and he pushes me, and for the team it's one step forward."



"Yes, I think so. I hear that some new people are arriving and that will help us. I trust Malcolm [Oastler] and all the team in the factory to improve the car for next year. Also I'm really happy with Honda, because they are making a big step with the engine for next year. It's a completely new philosophy."



"Yes, I'm very confident in the team. I work very well with everybody, and we need to continue this way."



"I would like to, yes!"



"It's good fun to drive, especially in practice and qualifying, but as for overtaking in the race, no way! It can be a boring race. So qualifying is really important, and so is the start. If you remember last year Mika Hakkinen got to the first corner first and he finished first. Fortunately our launch control is working well, and we haven't had any problems on the grid. Sometimes it is really strong, and even when it's not so good we don't lose any places at the start."
