Olivier Panis Q&A

Toyota continued its 100 percent reliability record as Cristiano da Matta and Olivier Panis both made it to the flag in Malaysia for the second successive race. However the Frenchman had a fraught time as poor radio communication meant he came into the pits when he wasn't required, and to add insult to injury he earned a speeding penalty in the process. Although the team seems to be at the back of the Michelin group, there were some signs of improvement at Sepang, and both drivers have faith in new technical director Mike Gascoyne. Adam Cooper spoke to Panis about his race

"Overall I think the team did a good job, and it's much more positive compared with Melbourne. We need to continue like this, and keep pushing."

"I don't know if we touched each other, but I went a little bit over the line onto the grass. After that I did quite a strong race. The pit stops were very good, but in the end we had a communication problem. I didn't understand what the engineers said, and they didn't understand what I said, and I thought I had to stop."

"Yes, but the feeling is better and better, and I think this weekend when we had some problems everybody fixed them very quickly. We understood what happened, we know what's going well, so I think it's quite good."

"Yeah, with an oil leak going onto the tyres. That didn't help a lot!"

"Yeah, it's not so bad. In the race itself I did a very good lap with the fuel we carried. I think it's getting better and better."

"We had some new aerodynamic parts on the car, and that helped the car quite a lot. It was quite good, but we still need some steps up."

"I'm very impressed with Mike. I'm very happy to have him here, and we've had some good discussions. I think he's the guy we need to improve the team, and he's already done a really good job."

"Yes. Now we need to close the gap with them, and I'm sure by the middle of the season we'll have a big step forward."

"Yes. It's a new circuit for everybody. We'll have some small improvements also, and like in Malaysia we want to finish the race and try to score some points."

"I've looked at the circuit a little bit, but not definitively yet. I'm sure we'll be ready."
