Olivier Panis Q&A

After a fruitful but frustrating year on the sidelines, Olivier Panis returned to race action in Melbourne last weekend. He soon confirmed that he will push BAR team mate Jacques Villeneuve hard this season. The Frenchman qualified one place and just 0.083s behind Jacques, having been held up by Nick Heidfeld on his best run. In the race, he had a solid drive to fourth on the road, but dropped to seventh, ironically after being penalised for passing Heidfeld under yellows. He may have lost the three points, but Panis has done enough to prove that BAR has made a wise choice. With his usual impeccable timing, Adam Cooper spoke to Panis just before he learned of the penalty

"Yes, I think so. The team needed the points. BAR and Honda worked a lot this winter for that, particularly the first three Grands Prix. We're there, and a fourth place is very positive for us, and now we need to continue to work. I'm very pleased about the team to be honest."

"Yes, I'm very impressed. We made a lot of laps throughout the winter. We made three race simulations with nothing wrong, so we were very positive about reliability, but it was very important, this first race."

"I'm quite happy with the tyres. We tried the soft one, and it was quite quick for qualifying, and during the race it was very constant, and the lap time was getting quicker and quicker. We put the maximum fuel in the car for the first run, and it was quite good."

"To be honest, no. It was difficult to see because I was about 100m behind, and I just saw the car flying. I didn't know what happened."

"I think I've proved something. I passed a very good season last year with McLaren, and now I've proved something during a race weekend, and I'm very pleased about it."

"I'm not very happy because he blocked me. He didn't see me in the mirrors. It was my best time, and in the first part of the circuit I was quicker and quicker. I'm very angry with that. I think it was possible to take seventh place."

"The basics are very good. We need to make one step higher, and we'll maybe prepare that for the next GP. I'm very pleased, and we need to continue to work the same way. I'm OK about the car and the team."

"The engine is good, but if we are to close the gap to the two best teams, then Honda also needs to work, but everybody knows what is the target, and I'm sure everybody will work a lot."

"With luck, but we don't know exactly to be honest."

"Why not? I think Michelin know tyres very well, but I'm very confident with Bridgestone also. The fighting is at quite a high level, because the cars and tyres are much quicker than last year."
