Newey: F1 must learn from Senna trial

Formula One must learn lessons from the trial which arose after the death of Brazilian F1 racer Ayrton Senna, according to McLaren technical director Adrian Newey

This week - after five years of legal action - an Italian judge threw out an appeal by Italian prosecutors against Newey and Williams technical director Patrick Head.

'The trial is one of the worst examples of the legal system behaving badly,' Newey told Autosport magazine this week.

'In terms of helping to understand what happened at Imola and learning from the event, it has achieved nothing. It has helped no one in F1 - only the lawyers.'

The two were accused of 'culpable homicide' following the death of triple world champion Ayrton Senna during the San Marino in May 1994.

This week's decision looks certain to end any further action against the two men. It also removes the threat of a one-year suspended sentence.

'Although the episode appears to be over,' said Newey, 'it's a lesson for F1 to learn. The sport should be pushing the EU for a new law.'
