Mugello, day 2: Kimi beats Ferrari
Kimi Raikkonen gave his McLaren team a lift following its difficult San Marino Grand Prix by out-pacing Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer at Mugello today
Badoer was eight tenths off the young Finn's best, as Ferrari joined McLaren and Toyota for the second day of running at the Italian track. David Coulthard took over from test driver Alex Wurz to set the third best time of the day.
Toyota was well off the pace of the two leading teams, but Mika Salo was still encouraged. "I am happy with my final day's work because we have found solutions to some problems we had at Imola - although it's a bit late now!" he said. "Joking aside, we finished the aero tests that I started yesterday and sis some work on traction control. We also used on my car some of the positive results that Allan [McNish] found on mechanical grip, and we have made quite good progress.
McNish will continue driving tomorrow, which is the final day of testing at Mugello this week. He will be joined by Toyota's test drivers Ryan Briscoe and Stephane Sarrazin.
While Badoer drove at Mugello, Ferrari's other test driver, Luciano Burti, tested at Monza. The Brazilian was behind the wheel of an F2001 for the second day of running and was trying out tyre evalutions for Bridgestone. The track included a temporary modification to the first chicane. Burti covered 89 laps.
