MotoGP's Biaggi tests for Midland
MotoGP refugee Max Biaggi will make his return to the Formula One cockpit with Midland F1 at Silverstone today, the team have confirmed
The Italian was at the team's Silverstone factory getting a seat fitting yesterday and the plan is for him to test the team's 2005 car after requesting another run in F1 machinery. Biaggi tested for Ferrari exactly seven years ago.
A team spokesman told autosport.com: "He expressed an interest in wanting to try an F1 car again following a test at Fiorano a few years ago.
"And from what he told us, he said that if he was going to do Superbikes in 2006 then this would be an ideal opportunity to learn the Silverstone circuit."
Biaggi's future in motorsport is unclear after his options in MotoGP dried up following a disappointing 2005 campaign. He was dropped by Honda and with no other options available, and despite attempts by Kawasaki to run an extra bike, he looks set to make the switch to World Superbikes.
It is not thought likely that he is being lined-up for a full-time testing deal with Midland, but the team could try and gain as much publicity as they possibly can out of his involvement with them - and further tests cannot be ruled out.
However, Midland have made it clear that this test is not part of a bigger evaluation like Ferrari are currently conducting with Valentino Rossi.
"There is nothing more to be read into this test," added the spokesman. "We are fulfilling his needs to try a F1 car. We are just fulfilling a dream."
Biaggi himself said on his official website last week, however, that there was a chance of a complete career change for him away from motorbikes.
"In this period I've had different opportunities, some of them very interesting, and I am thinking what option could be the best one for me," he said.
"If for absurd (reasons) I'd add two extra wheels, the show will change. In this period I am having good fun driving the GO-Kart 100cc...could it be a sign?"
