Montoya can only get better say bosses

Top members of the Williams-BMW team Gehard Berger and Patrick Head have lauded Juan Pablo Montoya's performance after winning Sunday's Italian Grand Prix and the pair believe the Colombian is set to get better and better

Montoya managed to hold off the challenge of Rubens Barrichello and the Schumacher brothers - Williams team mate Ralf and world champion Michael - to take his maiden GP win at Monza.

The former CART champion made the switch to Formula 1 this season and has been outperformed by team mate Ralf for the first half of the year. But after taking three pole positions in the last four races, Montoya was unstoppable in Italy and according to BMW Motorsport director Berger, this is only the beginning.

"Formula 1 is difficult for everyone," said Berger. "I think the most difficult thing for Montoya was coming from America, understanding that in F1 he has some big challenges from some Schumachers or whatever their names are!

"He just shows more and more that he can put his potential into some success. He's very good, he's very talented, but he's still just going to show next year how good he really is."

Montoya had to combat rapidly deteriorating rear tyres during Sunday's race as well as fend off pressure from a charging Barrichello. As a result, Williams technical director Head echoed Berger's praise for the 25-year old.

"Juan Pablo did a great job to keep his place in front because at one point his rear tyres were blistering badly causing understeer and we were worried," said Head. "But, fortunately he held it together and he thoroughly deserves this victory. It is a great result for the team and a great result for Juan Pablo.

"He has driven really well all season. I don't think anyone could have criticised his driving since Hockenheim. There are certainly going to be a few more wins for him along the way.

Berger is not worried that Montoya's recent form will put extra pressure on team mate Ralf and he is hopeful that inter-driver competition within the team will help to push the Grove-based outfit forward.

Williams is currently third in the constructors' standings just eight points behind second-placed McLaren with two races still to run. However, Berger says the team still has some work to do if it is to challenge the Ferrari mantle to take the championship next year.

"We have a reliability problem and some other problems," he said. "We're not so consistent through all the kinds of circuits. There are a lot of problems, but on the other hand we only have two seasons behind us, and we are already in quite good shape, so we just need to continue and keep the momentum."
