Jenson Button said he was still unsure about BAR's pace ,following today's free practice for the Australian Grand Prix.

"It's still difficult to know where we are in respect to the other teams," Button said, "but I think our sessions went to plan and everything seemed to run smoothly.

"We know which direction we want to go in tomorrow, so generally I'm pleased with the start we've made here today."

Button, whose 10 podiums last year helped BAR finish second in the Constructors' Championship behind Ferrari, finished as eighth fastest today.

Button's teammate Takuma Sato did not enjoy an easy day in the second BAR, the Japanese driver struggling with his car's handling. Sato finished well down the order, in 18th position, over a second behind his British teammate.

"I had a difficult start today," said Sato. "I didn't have good grip and there was a small issue with the brakes in the first session. I was happier with the balance when this was fixed for the second session.

"I think that we can continue our improvements tomorrow but there is still a lot of work to do."
