Mika Salo Q&A
After an impressive performance in the first three races Toyota had a much tougher time in Imola, with Allan McNish retiring on the grid and Mika Salo not making it beyond half distance. A clear sign of how expectations have risen is that 16th in qualifying for Salo was regarded as a disappointment, but in a way Imola served as a reality check for the team, who perhaps went into the start of the season better prepared than much of the opposition. Adam Cooper spoke to Mika in Italy.
"I nearly caught Fisichella a couple of times, but on lap three or four I lost my traction control. It was really difficult after that. It was working, but only sometimes, so I couldn't trust it at all. I had to drive really carefully. Then a little bit later - and it could be related - I lost the gearbox. I was short shifting to stop the wheelspin, so I damaged the gearbox and it broke."
"For me I think it's a good school for us now, that things are not so good as they seemed to be after the first three races. It's the first real difficult circuit where you have kerbs and all kinds of corners. We were bad all weekend."
"The kerbs were the biggest problem, and also for some reason while the Michelins seem to be quite OK, we couldn't get any grip out of them. My tyres looked like brand new after a half a race, so there's something we have to look for."
"Yes, it was good. It's exactly what I was hoping for, and it makes me happy that we achieved what I wanted to happen."
"It's quick, but the main thing was it was very reliable. We're still lacking a lot of things we need to be quicker, but everybody's working very hard and it will be better soon."
"There's lots of potential in it, but it needs everybody's full effort now, in the factory also, to make it go faster."
"The main thing has been communication in the team, that's the biggest thing. Also we know that we're lacking downforce on the car. Also our launch control is not very good, and I've lost positions at every start. It's lot of little things."
"This is what I was hoping for all the time, so like I said it makes me happy that we achieved what we wanted to achieve."
"For sure, yeah, it will get harder all the time. But also we should have the resources in the factory and all the people to make it fast as well. We need to make double steps all the time to catch up with everybody."
"The motivation is there, there's no question about that, it's just a question of getting things done quicker. This is new for the whole team, and in F1 you have to move a little bit quicker than in rallying."
"I think it's about 50:50. There's some circuits where we have advantages, and some where the others will be ahead. But I think overall Michelin has a good dry tyre. In the wet we are a little bit behind."
"Barcelona will be a difficult one again. We just have to try to improve things. You never know before you go there, but at the moment it looks like it's going to be difficult. We need more aero stuff and basically we need more grip. The car is bad over the bumps and it's very bumpy in Barcelona."
