Massa: consistency, not speed missing to secure Formula 1 future

Felipe Massa believes that better consistency rather than speed is the key to him securing his Formula 1 future with Ferrari

The Brazilian had a strong start to the campaign, but has suffered a spate of accidents and incidents in recent events to cast fresh doubts over his place at the team next year.

But Massa himself says he is not unduly worried by his situation, and reckons he has it within himself to deliver exactly what Ferrari wants.

"I know what I have to do; I just want to get the results," he said after testing at Silverstone this week.

"The pace is there, so I don't need to worry about the pace. I have shown the pace, but things have happened to make me not finish the race.

"I just need to concentrate on keeping the pace and I know if nothing happens then I will finish in a good position."

Massa believes that the onus to deliver more consistent results must also be shared with his team, though, which is still chasing improved qualifying form.

"I think it is important that we try to make the car quicker, especially in qualifying," he explained.

"We know normally in the race the car is stronger than in qualifying, but starting in a good position helps in the race.

"We are working, and trying to understand the car in the best way possible. It's my consistency as well.

"I need to improve as well my consistency to finish races. That is the most important thing.

"I was not very lucky in the [British Grand Prix] race with tyres, and in Bahrain with the tyres. So I need to try to finish the race in a consistent way. If nothing strange happens, I will be there."
