Mark Webber Q&A
Mark Webber was one of the unsung heroes of the Monaco GP weekend, although he was never quite able to follow up on his eighth place in Thursday practice. A mid teens qualifying sport was on the cards, but a shunt on oil on Saturday morning and then an unhelpful Felipe Massa kept him down in 19th. In the race he left the Jaguars behind and we had the unusual sight of a Minardi pitting early to get out of a traffic jam and into clean air! A tyre failure spoiled things and left him in 11th, having set a best lap 0.5s quicker than fourth placed Jarno Trulli. Opportunities for a good showing are few and far between for Minardi as the team struggles to keep up with development, although a typical safety car or rain-hit race in Montreal might help. Adam Cooper spoke to the Aussie.
"We ran quite a lot of fuel at the beginning, but we wanted to stop early because I was going nowhere. From when we stopped we could run all the way to the end. We won quite a bit with that, so it's a shame we had the tyre problem, because we could have been ninth."
"No, it just gave up in the tunnel. I shit myself! I was worried about the front wing collapsing, so I thought I'd better not be too stupid, as much as I wanted to stay out. But there was no chance, as the tyre was totally destroyed."
"I was stuck behind Panis and Massa, until Massa and Bernoldi went off. After the warm-up we had 90kgs in, and we thought it looked like we were going to get held up. We thought we'd get out of the group early, and even though we were going to be heavier than them, try and do some damage with fresh tyres. We only used two sets in qualifying so we had plenty of fresh tyres up our sleeve."
"We should have qualified 14th and we should have finished ninth. We know we should have run a 1m19.0s in qualifying [he did 1m19.6s], we just know it was there. But Massa did it for us in qualifying, and then the tyre let us down in the race, unfortunately. But I learned a lot, and it was a bloody good weekend for the guys. We had a lot of damage, but the guys did a phenomenal job. I'm very satisfied. That was really, really frustrating. But I just wanted to stay out of trouble and learn as much as I could, so it was a good day for us."
"I think Monaco was a good chance for us, although ninth was the maximum we could do. At the next few tracks we need power and aero, and fundamentally, with the finances we've got, it's not easy."
"We've got the Brazil car still, and it will be the same until Suzuka, I suspect!"
