Malaysian GP: Tipster's guide

With Michael Schumacher an overwhelming favourite to win the Malaysian Grand Prix and the odds shortened further by his Melbourne success, it's worth looking elsewhere for a good bet this weekend

Brother Ralf at 7-1 is a very attractive bet but Rubens Barrichello at 6-1 only makes sense if Michael's Ferrari breaks. And, as it's still the 2001 car, that's unlikely. The warmer temperature in Malaysia should suit Michelin and Williams, who were very competitive in qualifying here last year before being involved in opening lap aggro. Ralf is very fit and the race is one of the toughest of the year. Montoya at 9-2 is good, but not as good. Kimi Raikkonen in a McLaren on Michelins at 18-1 is a fine each-way punt.

If you want a home bet, David Coulthard at 8-1 is not as good as Raikkonen, but McLaren claims to have fixed the gearbox problem that stopped him in Australia and a podium finish would give you a return on an each-way bet.

For a longer shot, ask for odds on a points finish for Toyota again. Okay, Australia was a freak race but Malaysia will be another race of attrition. The FT102s looked pretty unbustable in Melbourne and should be quicker relative to the Bridgestone midfield runners on Michelins in the heat. Don't bet against Salo or McNish going the distance again and remember that Toyota tested in Malaysia last year, so will have some data to call upon.
