Latest spec Honda to race at Imola
Three rounds into 2002 F1 season and neither Jordan nor BAR have recorded a top six finish. In a bid to rectify this situation Honda, which supplies equal spec engines to both teams, is introducing the latest evolution of its V10 engine at next weekend's San Marino Grand Prix
So far this year its all-new V10 has been something of a disappointment. In a bid to ensure reliability the RA002E has been run at reduced revs, which has left drivers Jacques, Villeneuve, Olivier Panis, Giancarlo Fisichella and Takuma Sato with a horsepower disadvantage to many of their rivals.
Both BAR and Jordan tested the evolution of the motor, which has increased revs and reduced internal friction, at Valencia earlier this week.
"We did some good work with Honda and have certainly improved the driveability of the car for the next race," said BAR's Panis. "We have to wait and see how things go for us in Imola but I feel that we have made a small step forward since Brazil."
Giancarlo Fisichella retired from the Brazilian GP with engine failure, and he was encouraged to see Honda moving in the right direction.
"I'm fairly happy with the progress made over the last few days," he said after the test. "With regards to set-up we are very close to where we want to be and there have been some developments with the engine, which looks promising."
In its previous spell as an engine supplier (1983-1992), Honda gained an enviable reputation for producing the most powerful and drivable engines in the sport. Since returning with BAR in 2000 it has yet to reach the same heights, but Honda Racing team manager Shuhei Nakamoto is adamant that it will progress.
"Although we've had a tough start to the season we're determined to keep fighting," he said. "We're introducing a new evolution, which, although it isn't a huge step, is a definite step in the right direction. Our aim is to produce the best engine in Formula One and ultimately win the world championship and I am confident that we are taking the first steps to achieve our goal."
