Kubica insists BMW need more pace to win

Robert Kubica insists his BMW Sauber team will need to up their game if they want to score their maiden Formula One victory this season

The German squad have set their sights on scoring their first win this year, but their current pace seems to suggests only a stroke of luck could help them achieve their goal.

Kubica reckons the team still need more pace to be able to beat rivals Ferrari and McLaren, and the Pole admits it is crucial that he keeps scoring strongly in order to stay close to the top of the standings while BMW try to find more pace.

Kubica is currently in fourth place, just six points behind championship leader Lewis Hamilton.

"The only way for now to stay close to them is to be consistent and score points in every single race, that is what I am trying to do," Kubica told a news conference in Canada.

"Apart from Australia, where we know what happened, my worst result was a fourth place.

"The car has to improve if we want to beat Ferrari and McLaren and achieve the target of winning a race this season. That is the target this season, but there is a long way.

"We are pushing and trying to do the best we can and maybe one day we can stay in front of Ferrari and McLaren."

Kubica was a strong second in the Monaco Grand Prix, where he benefited from the conditions to finish behind Hamilton.

But the Pole confessed things would have been different in the dry.

"Of course it was a very good race," he added. "The conditions were different than usual with quite a lot of water. I drove quite a good race with no mistakes. I think I did a good job there.

"In dry conditions we saw the car was not up to finish second. Being six points behind the leader of the championship is good after six races. Let's hope to push with the upgrades to stay closer to Ferrari and McLaren."
