Jordan to bounce back in Canada
After a disappointing Spanish Grand Prix, Jordan are planning to bounce back to form in Canada
The Montreal track has been kind to them in the past. The team scored their first ever points here when Andrea de Cesaris and Bertrand Gachot finished 4th and 5th in 1991. Rubens Barrichello and Eddie Irvine were both on the podium in 1995, Giancarlo Fisichella took Jordan to 3rd in 1997 and even in the middle of last year's early-season crisis, Damon Hill's Jordan still ran 2nd for a while.
'We have had some excellent results in Montreal,' admits team boss Eddie Jordan. 'Let's hope we can add another good year to the history books.
'McLaren and Ferrari are currently in a class of their own, but we want to be next in line behind them. There is every reason to believe that both drivers can do well in Canada.'
Designer Mike Gascoyne agreed with Jordan,
'Traditionally Montreal is a circuit where Jordan has had a good set-up and a good car,' he said. 'It is a much lower downforce circuit than the other tracks we have raced on so far this year, and again, this has traditionally been a strong point for Jordan. '
He warned that the team had to improve its qualifying performances. Choosing to run hard tyres wrecked their chances of top grid slots in Catalunya.
'I believe we are the third quickest car behind McLaren and Ferrari,' Gascoyne insisted. 'But if we do not qualify high enough we do not get a chance to show that. We are coming through in the races despite qualifying lower, but we could look even stronger if we started higher up the order. We need to look closely at how we make our tyre choice at future races.'
