Jordan has just three cars for Monaco
Jordan will have just three cars at next weekend's Monaco GP after Takuma Sato's chassis was destroyed in his Austrian GP incident. The tight confines of the most famous track in F1 means that teams normally take four cars to the race - two for each driver. However, a lack of spares means the Jordan drivers will have to be extra careful in practice and qualifying this year
"Qualifying is everything at Monaco, and we can only take three cars, since Takuma's car was damaged beyond repair in Austria," said Gary Anderson, Jordan's director of race and test engineering. "The pressure is to conserve what we have, so the drivers need to respect the barriers and stay clean and tidy with their driving."
It took six attempts but Jordan finally broke its 2002 points duck last time out at the Austrian GP. Now the team heads to Monte Carlo hoping to add to its tally. It is a race where Giancarlo Fisichella has a strong record, having scored points on four of his six GPs there, including two podiums.
"I consider the Monaco Grand Prix to be a home race," said the Italian. "I have some wonderful memories tied to this great circuit, including my Italian Formula 3 Championship victory here in 1994. The circuit is difficult and elaborate, but it is also fun."
Team-mate Takuma Sato has made a strong recovery since his miracle escape in Austria and is raring to make his debut at the track in this weekend's historic GP (for separate story, click here).
"The pain has been going gradually from my knee and leg so I am glad to be able to come back and race," he said. "I am really looking forward to the historic race. I have put the Austrian accident behind me now and it will not affect my performance in Monaco at all."
