Jordan Calls for Silverstone Improvements

Team owner Eddie Jordan believes that drastic funds must be ploughed into the Silverstone circuit if the British Grand Prix is to retain its place on the Formula One calendar.

Team owner Eddie Jordan believes that drastic funds must be ploughed into the Silverstone circuit if the British Grand Prix is to retain its place on the Formula One calendar.

The Northamptonshire circuit has faced stern criticism in recent years for its poor facilities following traffic problems last year and muddy roads which caused havoc for spectators in 2000.

Despite £60 million (pounds) being put into improving the track, Jordan feels that much more needs to be done if Silverstone is to match the standards of the newer tracks in Malaysia and China.

"There is a possibility (that it will be taking off the calendar) and we must wake ourselves up to that," said the Irish team owner. "They are doing a lot with the track. It is very safe and is a good racing track, and the roads around it have improved.

"But the facilities are poor, especially in relation to major circuits, especially in the Far East."

The circuit's owners, the British Racing Drivers' Club, have been accused of not doing enough to raise the necessary funds to bring the circuit up to the high standards demanded by Formula One ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone.

Jordan, whose team are based over the road to the circuit, admits that despite the Government recently injecting £16 million (pounds) into British motorsport, fears over the future of the race remain.

"There is a lot of government intervention and a lot of government finance and I think whether it comes from government or taxpayers, Silverstone need to do something about the pit complex and about the grandstands," said Jordan. "Then I believe we will have one of the best circuits in Formula One."
