Jerez Day 4: Gene tops class of three

Three lonely cars were in action at the final day of Jerez testing today (Friday), following the departure of the pace-setting Renault squad.

This left Williams pilot Marc Gene out in front of the two McLarens in a test that has been marked by the high number of laps completed. Today Gene clocked 130 laps to complete four solid days of tyre testing for Michelin. The temperature climbed to 35 degrees at one stage.

Alex Wurz returned to take the wheel of the single remaining MP4-18 McLaren, whilst David Coulthard continued to work with the MP4-17D that he will use for at least the next two races. Toward day's end, Wurz 's best lap was not even close to Coulthard's.

At Fiorano in Italy, Luca Badoer conducted a shakedown of one of the three F2003-GA cars to be used at the European Grand Prix.
