Jerez 1: Button flies
Jenson Button continued to impress with the new BAR-Honda 006 chassis, setting the fastest time on the first day of a five-day test at Jerez in Spain
Button has been consistently near, or at, the top of the times since the launch of the rapid new BAR and his fastest lap of 1m17.708s today was not a one-lap qualifying run, although it was on low fuel. Team-mate Takuma Sato confirmed the team's pace with third fastest, as he got more running in the new 006.
Renault's Jarno Trulli was happy with the second fastest time. The Italian spent the day driving the new R24 while tester Franck Montagny (seventh fastest) worked on a programme in the hybrid chassis.
Luca Badoer was fourth fastest for Ferrari as he embarked on a mammoth Bridgestone tyre testing programme.
McLaren test driver Alex Wurz outpaced David Coulthard for fifth fastest time. Both drivers were in the new MP4-19, but DC encountered gearbox problems that hampered his running time.
Christian Klein began acclimatising to the new Jaguar R5 and set the eighth fastest time, ahead of the two Saubers of Giancarlo Fisichella and Felipe Massa.
Jordan brought up the rear with still-to-be-confirmed Giorgio Pantano outpacing Nick Heidfeld in the new EJ-14. The team encountered some balance problems early-on and subsequently asked the drivers not to push the car - the only one available at the test - too hard.
