Jenson Button pre-race Q&A
Jenson Button fulfilled BAR's pre-season expectations by taking an impressive fourth place in qualifying at Melbourne, ably backed up by team mate Takuma Sato in seventh. Although there's still a long way to go - and the team's fuel strategy will be revealed in the race - BAR has done enough to silence the critics who thought it was showboating in testing. Button is also the second fastest Michelin runner, beaten only by Juan Pablo Montoya. Bearing in mind the usual chaos we see at Albert Park, and the increased likelihood of late race engine failures, a victory is not out of the question. Adam Cooper caught up with Jenson straight after qualifying
"I'm reasonably happy, more because it was the T-car than anything else. It was the second run I'd done with it - the first was in first qualifying! It's nice to know that it's put together correctly, and the boys did a great job of getting it all sorted for the second run."
"I really don't know. The two red ones seem to be very quick. I think we just have to do our own race, and see where we end up at this time of the season. We've got to run exactly like we want to, we haven't got to start thinking about other teams yet, and do our own little programme in the race."
"I think we're going to have the reliability, which it's great, and if we finish I'll be very disappointed if we're not in the points. I think we can have a good weekend."
"It's nervewracking, very, because you do you first lap and if you've done a good lap you've got to sit around for ages waiting to go out again. It is more nervewracking, but I suppose it is a bit more exciting for everyone."
"Yes it is. I didn't know how much the track would change. I saw some quick times in the second session - to go 0.8s quicker is quite a lot - but then again I was bedding myself in on the first run."
"Yeah, it was quite interesting. The only shock is how quick Ferrari are!"
"I didn't think they would be that far ahead. Half a second is huge, really, but we still don't know what fuel loads people are running. It's Ferrari, and people expect them to do long runs in the race, so they're probably doing the opposite! We'll just have to wait and see."
"It is! It's nice to be talking about the teams which finished in the top four in the championship, really. Ferrari look very strong, and obviously Williams. I'm surprised that we're 0.6s quicker than the Renault. I don't know what strategy they're on."
"We didn't do that many laps on Friday, because Anthony [Davidson] did a lot of the testing. I think we're pretty happy with how many laps we did, and going into the race I think we're looking reliable."
"Friday is the same as two years ago, which seems like yesterday anyway. Then Saturday is just a little bit more nervewracking as well. You don't really know where you stand until you get to qualifying, and that's probably why I was very nervous."
"I think I'll be sleeping well tonight! But there's a lot of strategy stuff to go through, and it's going to be busy."
"I think it's going to be a little bit tough with the speed of the Ferraris. We didn't expect that coming here anyway. I think we'll be very happy if we're in the higher points scoring positions."
"It would be nice, bit again we don't know what fuel people are running. The Renaults are always very quick in the race, the Williams are going to be quick, and the Ferraris, and that's six cars. So it's going to be tough."
