Jarno Trulli Disqualified

Jarno Trulli has been stripped of his fourth place at the United States Grand Prix after race scrutineers discovered an irregularity with the skid block on the underside of his Jordan.

Jarno Trulli has been stripped of his fourth place at the United States Grand Prix after race scrutineers discovered an irregularity with the skid block on the underside of his Jordan.

The skid block, or plank, which is fitted to the base of the car and is measured after the race and must obey strict regulations of wear and tear, was found to be 1.5 millimeters too short.

"Having checked the skid block the thickness around the rear hole is 7.5mm, which is 1.5mm below the minimum regulations," said a statement from the race stewards.

Jordan and Trulli have the right to appeal, but it is unlikely that the stewards will reverse their decision. The new result means that Jaguar's Eddie Irvine is now classified fourth, Sauber's Nick Heidfeld fifth and Trulli's teammate Jean Alesi sixth.

The biggest impact with the result change comes in the Constructors' Championship. Jordan were originally just two points behind fourth placed Sauber, but are now five points adrift and instead of being two points ahead of Honda rivals British American Racing they are now level on 17 points.

Jaguar have also been boosted in their quest to overtake Benetton in the standings. They were a point behind seventh placed Benetton, but are now level on 10 points thanks to Irvine.
