Irvine aims for top podium spot

Eddie Irvine is looking to go one better at Suzuka as he bids to become world champion at the Japanese Grand Prix

The Ulsterman, who leads the world championship going into the final round, has finished in every points position but first.

And he is hoping to put that right on Sunday although he admits he would be equally content for teammate Michael Schumacher to win as long as he still becomes world champion.

'I have finished sixth, fifth, fourth, third and second so this year would be just the right time to go one better,' said Irvine.

'Suzuka is a very special circuit for me. I have driven thousands of kilometres here I racing and testing and it was also the scene of my Formula One debut back in 1993.

'After the tension of the last ten days, I am looking forward to getting on with my job and racing on the most challenging track on the calendar.

'Whatever happens I will enjoy the weekend.

'I feel pretty confident about Suzuka and I'm really looking forward to it.

'It would be good if Michael wins and Mika comes second, I really have to be in the first four but it may not be so easy.'

Irvine leads McLaren's Mika Hakkinen by four points going into this final race but both can win the title if they win the race, regardless of where the other finishes.
