Honda Aim to Fight for Title Soon

Japanese engine suppliers Honda are confident the 2003 season will finally see them make a big step forward after struggling since their return to Formula One.

Japanese engine suppliers Honda are confident the 2003 season will finally see them make a big step forward after struggling since their return to Formula One.

Honda, multi times World Champions at the end of the 1980s and start of the 1990s, returned to Grand Prix racing at the start of the 2000 season, working exclusively with the BAR team. The partnership, however, has been less than fruitful, with only a couple of podium finishes as their best results in the past three seasons.

Honda F1's project leader Takeo Kiuchi, however, believes, the new Honda engine, combined with the BAR 005 unveiled today at Barcelona, will allow them to take a significant leap forward.

"Over the past three years we have had a difficult time since our return to F1 - we have not been satisfied with our performance and we want to do better," said Kiuchi. "In 2003 we want to start the season competitively.

"The RA003E is more than 15kg lighter than last year's engine; it revs to more than 19,000rpm and the torque curve is improved, too. Our target is to get into a position to fight for the world title as soon as possible. In short, Honda is committed to BAR, to Formula One and to winning."

Honda will supply engines to the BAR team exclusively in 2003, after Jordan decided to end their partnership and opt for Ford engines instead. The Japanese giants and the Brackley-based squad are getting more close together in 2003, and Honda will not only provide engines to the team but also continue to play a role in the joint chassis development programme.

Honda will also provide additional financial support to the team with noticeably stronger branding on the new car.

"The greater visible link to the team will provide all Honda staff and fans around the world with a greater sense of pride, involvement and motivation towards our F1 activities," added Kiuchi.
